Title: My Life In The Dark: A Marriage Built On Lies

Author: Kathleen M. Kline

Year: 2024

Category: Personal Stories (Domestic Violence)

Premise: Kathleen, a young mother, discovers that her spouse is not who he claims to be. Cody - really Mike - is not from Texas but rather snowy Canada. This is not his first marriage and he has, in fact, 4 other children in addition to the 3 he has with Kathleen. As worst? All of his family knew about the lie and said nothing. When she discovers the truth, Kathleen must protect her family from a man who soon becomes her stalker. She must travel across the country in an effort to hide from him.

Review: I've never read a book about domestic violence (of any gender) before. I've been privileged enough to not encounter any situations where I've known about the domestic violence. So it was quite eye-opening for me to see the reality of what women go through, and the extent to which they must fight for the safety of their families. There were definitely some frightening scenes in the book, dealing with physical violence, manipulation, potential kidnapping. I was really enlightened by reading this book and I read it in just a few sittings.

Recommendation: Keeping in mind that this book could trigger some people as it deals with domestic violence, I would highly recommend this book to everyone. I think it gives a clear picture of the difficulties faced by families experiencing domestic violence. I think the book would be great for some women's-study courses where domestic violence and the law's response to it are studied from a philosophical lens.
